Price volatility has long been one of the features of the cryptocurrency market. When asset prices move quickly in either direction and the market itself is relatively thin, it can sometimes be difficult to conduct transactions as might be needed. To overcome this problem, a new type of cryptocurrency tied in value to existing currencies — ranging from the U.S. dollar, other fiats or even other cryptocurrencies — arose. These new cryptocurrency are known as stablecoins, and they can be used for a multitude of purposes due to their stability.
When Bitcoin’s price goes to the moon, investing in the popular cryptocurrency can be tempting. But while it has the potential to be a lucrative investment, you should be cautious: It’s an incredibly volatile purchase, and experts don’t recommend you allocate a large percentage to this risky asset class.
On the flip side, countries like China have moved to heavily clamp down on Bitcoin mining and trading activities. In May 2021, the Chinese government declared that all crypto-related transactions are illegal. This was followed by a heavy crackdown on Bitcoin mining operations, forcing many crypto-related businesses to flee to friendlier regions.

Just two months later, on January 3, 2009, Nakamoto mined the first block on the Bitcoin network, known as the genesis block, thus launching the world’s first cryptocurrency. Bitcoin price was $0 when first introduced, and most Bitcoins were obtained via mining, which only required moderately powerful devices (e.g. PCs) and mining software. The first known Bitcoin commercial transaction occurred on May 22, 2010, when programmer Laszlo Hanyecz traded 10,000 Bitcoins for two pizzas. At Bitcoin price today in mid-September 2021, those pizzas would be worth an astonishing $478 million. This event is now known as “Bitcoin Pizza Day.” In July 2010, Bitcoin first started trading, with the Bitcoin price ranging from $0.0008 to $0.08 at that time.
Some examples of prominent cryptocurrencies that have undergone hard forks are the following: Bitcoin’s hard fork that resulted in Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum’s hard fork that resulted in Ethereum Classic.
One of the biggest winners is Axie Infinity — a Pokémon-inspired game where players collect Axies (NFTs of digital pets), breed and battle them against other players to earn Smooth Love Potion (SLP) — the in-game reward token. This game was extremely popular in developing countries like The Philippines, due to the level of income they could earn. Players in the Philippines can check the price of SLP to PHP today directly on CoinMarketCap.

What is cryptocurrency mining
This issue confounded the creators of digital currencies for decades until Satoshi Nakamoto (most likely a pseudonym) invented something called the blockchain. The full theory of how these work is pretty complicated—we go into more depth in our article on explaining the « blockchain »—but the easiest way to explain it is to picture it as a chain.
The majority of the Bitcoin network mining capacity is owned by large mining firms and pools. It is still possible to participate in Bitcoin mining with a regular at-home personal computer if you have one of the latest and fastest graphics processing units. However, the chances of receiving any reward by mining alone with a single GPU in your computer are minuscule. You’ll need to find a mining pool (discussed below) to increase your chances.
Crypto mining is not inherently illegal; the jurisdiction and compliance with local regulations determine it. In many countries, crypto mining is legal and widely practiced as a legitimate activity. However, some regions may impose restrictions or outright bans on mining due to environmental concerns, electricity consumption, or regulatory uncertainties.
Another downside of ASIC mining is that organizations that possess and maintain many ASIC systems could gain control of the blockchain network. This leaves ASIC-based mining more vulnerable to a 51% attack.

Vitalik Buterin, the creator of Ethereum (ETH), said in a January 2022 tweet, “I would call BCH mostly a failure. My main takeaway: Communities formed around a rebellion, even if they have a good cause, often have a hard time long term because they value bravery over competence and are united around resistance rather than a coherent way forward.”
Following a lot of hype surrounding Aptos, it slumped in its trading debut. It has faced criticism over the allocation of its tokens, with nearly half allocated to investors, core contributors and the Aptos Labs foundation. This distribution of tokens, known as tokenomics, is a prime factor when assessing a new cryptocurrency.
For those new to crypto, Layer 1 implies that the crypto has its own blockchain that can be used as a building block. A few well-known Layer 1 cryptos include Ethereum, Cardano (ADA) and Solana (SOL).
When assessing new crypto assets, it’s crucial to perform your due diligence and learn as much as possible about a project’s tokenomics. White papers, commonly found on a startup’s website, often give a steer on this — detailing the digital asset’s unique selling points, use cases and the roadmap for the future. Also bear in mind that some new crypto coins can surge in their early days, only to crash abruptly soon after.
With thousands of cryptocurrencies out there, blockchain technology is being used in new and exciting ways. Trends are continuing to emerge, and awareness and adoption is rising. With central banks exploring digital currencies with gusto — and private companies such as Facebook embarking on projects such as the Libra stablecoin — expect to see even more cryptocurrencies hit the market in the months and years to come.
